Chickens Neck Mountain Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Chickens Neck Mountain Ecological Reserve is a BC Parks ecological reserve beside Highway 37, 53 kilometres north of Dease Lake village. BC Parks says it was established to preserve an excellent stand of mature spruce and subalpine fir forest in the Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone.

The reserve is also listed in the Spruce-Willow-Birch biogeoclimatic zone and Cassiar Ranges terrestrial ecosection.

Why Visit Chickens Neck Mountain Ecological Reserve

Chickens Neck Mountain is a focused forest reserve for low-impact visitors interested in northern mature spruce, subalpine fir, and research-oriented protected areas. BC Parks explains that ecological reserves protect special natural ecosystems and support research and education.

The reserve is open to the public for non-destructive activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography. Its main appeal is careful observation of the mature forest stand and its northern mountain context, using the official detailed reserve description as background.

The Highway 37 location makes pre-trip map review especially useful for orientation.

Rules are strict because the area is not intended for ordinary recreation. Consumptive activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and foraging are prohibited, and motorized vehicles are not allowed. Research and educational activities require a permit.

Things To Do

Plan around quiet walking, mature spruce and subalpine fir observation, forest photography, non-destructive natural history study, and education-focused visits.

Planning Notes

Use official maps for general information only, not legal boundaries or navigation. Do not camp, hunt, fish, forage, or use motorized vehicles, and apply for permits before research or education work.
