Checleset Bay Ecological Reserve | British Columbia

Checleset Bay Ecological Reserve is a BC Parks ecological reserve between Kyuquot and the Brooks Peninsula on the west coast of Vancouver Island. BC Parks says it was established to provide high-quality marine habitat for a reintroduced population of sea otters.

The goal is to increase sea otter range and abundance until they are no longer endangered.

Why Visit Checleset Bay Ecological Reserve

Checleset Bay is a marine conservation reserve, not a conventional recreation park. BC Parks explains that ecological reserves protect special natural ecosystems and support research and education.

The reserve is open to the public for non-destructive activities such as hiking, nature observation, and photography. Its official values include Coastal Western Hemlock uplands, Vancouver Island Shelf and Windward Island Mountains terrestrial ecosections, and Continental Slope and Vancouver Island Shelf marine ecosections.

BC Parks also provides a protected-areas map for Kyuquot Sound and Checleset Bay.

Rules are strict because sea otter recovery and marine habitat protection come first. Consumptive activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and foraging are prohibited, and motorized vehicles are not allowed. BC Parks provides a detailed reserve description, and research or educational activities require a permit.

Things To Do

Plan around careful marine nature observation, distant sea otter awareness, photography, education-focused visits, and low-impact travel that avoids disturbing shorelines, marine habitat, and wildlife.

Planning Notes

Use official maps for general information only, not legal boundaries or navigation. Review wildlife safety, do not camp, hunt, fish, forage, or use motorized vehicles, and apply for permits before research or education work.
