Cetan/Thurston Bay Conservancy | British Columbia

Cetan/Thurston Bay Conservancy is a BC Parks conservancy on the northwest side of Sonora Island in Johnstone Strait. BC Parks says it was designated in 2007 and sits beside Thurston Bay Marine Park.

The conservancy connects the two separate portions of Thurston Bay Marine Park.

Why Visit Cetan/Thurston Bay Conservancy

Cetan/Thurston Bay is a boat-only Inside Passage stop with sheltered anchorage, small beaches, paddling routes, and random camping. BC Parks says access is by boat, kayak, or canoe only and there are no developed facilities, although random camping is allowed.

The conservancy provides additional sheltered anchorage and recreation opportunities for boaters travelling the popular Inside Passage. Paddlers can explore Cameleon Harbour, Handfield Bay, Block Island, Anchorage Lagoon, and nearby islets and coves in and around the conservancy and Thurston Bay Park.

There are small beaches along the rocky shoreline that support quiet exploration.

Campbell River is about one hour away by water taxi.

An unmaintained trail leads to Florence Lake, which BC Parks describes as peaceful for swimming, fishing, and paddling. Other listed activities include ocean swimming, canoeing, kayaking, salmon and rockfish fishing, scuba diving, and waterfowl hunting only during open season.

Things To Do

Plan around boat-based anchorage, kayak and canoe travel, random camping, Florence Lake, Cameleon Harbour, Handfield Bay, Block Island, Anchorage Lagoon, ocean swimming, salmon and rockfish fishing, scuba diving, and waterfowl hunting.

Planning Notes

Use marine charts 3539 and 3543, confirm Rockfish Conservation Area limits, carry fishing licences, expect no developed facilities, and plan water taxi or boat logistics from Campbell River.
