Callaghan Conservancy | British Columbia

Callaghan Conservancy is a BC Parks conservancy in the Callaghan Valley near Whistler. It was established in 2008 as Sea to Sky Conservancy 1 and renamed Callaghan Conservancy in 2009.

BC Parks describes the Callaghan Valley as a year-round backcountry recreation area, with winter as the primary season.

Why Visit Callaghan Conservancy

Callaghan Conservancy is a winter-focused backcountry landscape connected to the 2010 Winter Olympics Nordic sports venue at Whistler Olympic Park. BC Parks says the area receives an average snowpack of 275 centimetres and may yield 150 days of skiing.

Rolling subalpine terrain and meadows in the upper valley near Conflict Lake suit Nordic skiing, while steeper slopes support telemark skiing, alpine ski touring, and heli-skiing. Western sections are used by skilled snowmobilers, with access from the adjacent Brandywine Recreation Trail and seasonal motorized restrictions.

In summer, access is from Highway 99 and Callaghan Valley Road, then a rough forest service road through Callaghan Lake Park. A rough trail leads west from Callaghan Lake into the conservancy. Winter use includes groomed cross-country trails, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, and limited snowmobiling in specified areas.

Trail-use fees may apply on groomed systems.

Things To Do

Plan around groomed Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, alpine touring, telemark skiing, backcountry lodge access, mountaineering on boundary peaks, hiking, wildlife viewing platforms, limited snowmobiling, and possible cutthroat trout fishing.

Planning Notes

No wilderness camping is permitted. Bring drinking water, pack out garbage, expect minimal cell coverage, prepare for avalanches and unsafe lake ice, and note that dogs and other pets are not suitable.
