Bull Canyon Park is a small BC Parks campground on Highway 20, six kilometres west of Alexis Creek. BC Parks says it is the only provincial campsite along Highway 20 between Williams Lake and Tweedsmuir Park.
The campground sits in a canyon beside the glacier-blue Chilcotin River.
Bull Canyon is a useful Chilcotin base for Highway 20 travellers who want a compact campground, canyon scenery, and a short interpretive walk. The surrounding area supports fishing lakes, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing, and BC Parks notes that people can view shallow caves in Bull Canyon Mountain from the Chilcotin River Interpretive Trail.
The Chilcotin River Interpretive Trail is two kilometres return and was designed and developed by students from Alexis Creek Elementary School. The park's history also includes an earlier recreation reserve created in 1955, a Forest Service fire suppression camp east of the present campground, campground development in the 1970s, reconstruction in 1992, and provincial park designation in 1993.
The Chilcotin River at Bull Canyon is Class II Classified Waters, so special fishing restrictions apply.
BC Parks also notes protected archaeological sites within the park.
Plan around frontcountry camping, the two kilometre interpretive trail, canyon views, shallow cave viewpoints, Chilcotin River fishing under special rules, road cycling, pets on leash, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing.
The river is very cold and fast, and swimming is not recommended. Keep children and pets away from the water. Gates are locked from September 16 to May 14, and ORVs are prohibited.
