Bugaboo Park is a BC Parks alpine park in the Purcell Mountains of southeast British Columbia, west of Highway 95 between Golden and Radium Hot Springs. BC Parks says its glacier-sculpted granite spires draw climbers from around the world.
Many peaks in the Bugaboos rise above 3,000 metres.
Bugaboo Park is one of British Columbia's major alpine climbing landscapes, suitable only for experienced, well-equipped climbers and hikers. The Conrad Kain Hut, maintained by BC Parks and the Alpine Club of Canada, serves as a climber basecamp and helps reduce impacts below Snowpatch Spire.
Some hikes do not require technical mountaineering skills, while others move into serious terrain. The Conrad Kain Hut trail is five kilometres one way, climbs 700 metres, and follows the lateral moraine of Bugaboo Glacier through steep granite terrain. The Cobalt Lake trail is 8.5 kilometres one way, climbs 800 metres, and requires route-finding on the final section. The Malloy Igloo route is a demanding mountaineering trip involving glacier crossings.
Climbing routes range from moderate to difficult, but many require glacier travel, crevasse rescue skills, ropes, crampons, and ice axes.
Plan around alpine hiking, Conrad Kain Hut access, Cobalt Lake, technical climbing, glacier travel, hunting only under park conditions, backcountry camping registration, and seasonal trail-condition review.
Access is by rough resource roads where high clearance is recommended and industrial traffic may be present. Weather changes suddenly, public communications are unavailable, rescue is not readily available, and mountain biking, drones, fires, and domestic animals are prohibited.
