Buccaneer Bay Park is a small marine BC Parks site on the sand spit at the southern tip of North Thormanby Island, off the Sunshine Coast near Secret Cove. BC Parks says the large sheltered bay provides safe anchorage in most summer conditions.
The park is accessible only by boat, with shoreline access by dinghy.
Buccaneer Bay is a warm-water marine camping and beach stop. BC Parks highlights broad sandy beaches, warm water, fishing, swimming, camping, and picnicking. The day-use area includes beach areas and upland areas south of the gap.
Kayak and canoe camping are available, with rentals outside the park at Halfmoon Bay. Paddlers need to be careful in Welcome Passage because many large vessels move through the narrow channel, creating large wakes that can combine with wind and make water conditions dangerous.
The park also protects important marine habitat. A recent expansion added 44.5 hectares of foreshore, protecting seagrass meadows and sand shoals used by shorebirds, salmon, rockfish, sandlance, Dungeness crab, seals, sea lions, and birds.
BC Parks also notes that liquor is limited to registered campsites, not day-use or beach areas.
Plan around boat-access camping, sheltered anchorage, sandy beach swimming, picnicking, kayak and canoe camping, ocean fishing, wildlife watching from a respectful distance, and marine-chart-based paddling.
Bring all drinking water because potable water is not available. There is no boat launch in the park. Watch shoal patches, respect nearby private property, stay out of restoration areas, use campfire rings only, and pack out waste.
