Big Bunsby Marine Park | British Columbia

Big Bunsby Marine Park is a BC Parks marine park on the west coast of northern Vancouver Island, about 30 kilometres southwest of Port Alice. BC Parks says access is by boat only, commonly through Kyuquot Sound, with boat launches at Fair Harbour and Artlish.

The park was established to focus recreation away from adjacent Checleset Bay Ecological Reserve.

Why Visit Big Bunsby Marine Park

Big Bunsby is a marine wilderness destination for boaters, sea kayakers, anglers, campers, and nature viewers. BC Parks says the park offers sheltered anchorages, excellent sea kayaking, and nature viewing around the largest of the Bunsby group of islands.

There are no developed campsites, but boaters and kayakers seeking wilderness experience can find places to camp on Big Bunsby. Low tides create tide pools for observing intertidal life, and BC Parks asks visitors to look without touching in this sensitive environment.

The Bunsby Islands area offers world-class kayaking and canoeing, with Brooks Peninsula Park within a day's paddle. Saltwater fishing is popular for salmon, with rockfish and halibut also possible. BC Parks warns that exposed and submerged rocks make navigation challenging in Checleset Bay.

Things To Do

Plan around boat-access camping, sheltered anchorage, sea kayaking, canoeing, tide-pool observation, salmon, rockfish and halibut fishing, marine wildlife viewing, wilderness photography, and careful island exploration.

Planning Notes

There is no boat launch in the park. Check marine charts 3682 and 3683, weather, tides, fog, rock hazards, fishing rules, First Nations reserve boundaries, camping impacts, and BC Parks updates before travelling.
