Babine Mountains Park is a BC Parks site in the Skeena East region near Smithers and Telkwa. BC Parks says the park lies within the Skeena Mountains ecosection and features glacier-fed lakes, rugged peaks, and vast subalpine meadows.
Access to the west end is off Old Babine Lake Road east of the Bulkley River bridge, while east-side trailheads are along Babine Lake Road.
Babine Mountains is a year-round mountain park for day hiking, overnight hiking, alpine routes, skiing, snowshoeing, and permitted winter snowmobiling. BC Parks says the area supports healthy populations of mountain goat, moose, marmot, and many bird species.
The Cronin Pass route is a backcountry, multi-use, multi-direction trail made of three trail segments totalling 26.7 kilometres for hikers, bikers, and horses. Other highlighted routes include Cronin Creek Trail, Hyland Pass Trail, and Silver King Basin Trail, which starts at the abandoned Silver King Mine and reaches the Joe L'Orsa Cabin.
Visitors should expect true backcountry conditions. BC Parks warns that grizzly and black bears may be found in the park, natural water should be boiled or treated, and some trails are closed to motorized vehicles during summer.
Plan around day hiking, overnight hiking, Cronin Pass, Silver King Basin, mountain biking where allowed, horseback use, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling by special permit, alpine photography, and wildlife awareness.
Carry drinking water, obey seasonal motorized closures, avoid muddy trail damage, leash pets and keep them out of alpine goat habitat, respect former mine signage, check Forest Service Road safety, and review BC Parks updates.
