Ancient Forest/Chun T'oh Whudujut Protected Area is a BC Parks protected area in the Omineca region, on Highway 16 between Prince George and McBride. BC Parks says it is about 115 kilometres east of Prince George and 103 kilometres west of McBride.
The protected area sits in Lheidli T'enneh traditional territory and protects part of the only inland temperate rainforest in the world.
This protected area is closely tied to the Ancient Forest trail experience. BC Parks says hiking here brings visitors past thousand-year-old western redcedars and through a landscape rich with plants, mosses, lichens, and fungi.
The universal access trail is about 450 metres one way, with a boardwalk designed so people with varied mobility and mental health needs, along with other visitors, can experience the forest. The Ancient Forest Boardwalk Trail continues for 2.3 kilometres and gives a close look at the inland temperate rainforest.
Driscoll Ridge Trail is a strenuous 15.5 kilometre loop to the ridge line and is for experienced, well-prepared hikers. The protected area also has winter snowshoeing opportunities on the Ancient Forest Boardwalk Trail, with limited winter parking.
Plan around boardwalk hiking, universal access forest viewing, Driscoll Ridge hiking, leashed-pet walks, snowshoeing, interior wetbelt ecology, rare plant awareness, and hunting only in areas and seasons where permitted.
Bring your own water, because potable water is not available. Overnight camping, smoking on Ancient Forest trails, and campfires are not allowed. Confirm trail conditions, highway access, winter parking, hunting setbacks, and BC Parks updates.
