Anarchist Protected Area | British Columbia

Anarchist Protected Area is a BC Parks protected area in the Okanagan region, five kilometres north of Osoyoos. BC Parks says it was established to increase representation of low-elevation forests that are under-represented in the protected area system, including Douglas fir and ponderosa pine.

The official page is clear that this is not a recreational destination and that public access is extremely limited.

Why Visit Anarchist Protected Area

Anarchist Protected Area is mainly important as conservation habitat in the Okanagan Valley. BC Parks says it protects red- and blue-listed plant and bird species, and the wildlife section adds rare bird, bat, and snake values.

The protected area is home to four blue-listed and two red-listed bat species. Its ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest provides habitat for the red-listed white-headed woodpecker and Williamson's sapsucker, along with five other blue-listed birds. BC Parks also notes four red- and blue-listed snake species, including night snake and western rattlesnake.

Because public access is extremely limited, visitors should not treat Anarchist as a typical day-use park. The official activity list includes wildlife viewing and hunting during open season, but both require careful rule checks, boundary awareness, and respect for the protected area's conservation purpose.

Things To Do

Plan around low-impact wildlife viewing where access is legal, rare-species awareness, Okanagan forest observation, hunting in season where permitted, map review, and conservation research from official sources.

Planning Notes

Confirm access, boundaries, hunting seasons, licences, rare-species sensitivity, closures, maps, fire conditions, snake awareness, and BC Parks updates before travelling.
