Errington, British Columbia: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Errington is a rural Vancouver Island community in British Columbia’s Vancouver Island region, inland from Parksville and close to the Englishman River. It is known less as a formal town than as a lived-in rural place with farms, forest edges, community halls, local roads and access to a major waterfall park.

How Errington Started

BC Geographical Names records Errington as an official community and notes its post office adoption in the mid twentieth century. The name and settlement pattern are tied to rural roads off the Alberni Highway corridor, where farming, small holdings, community institutions and forest access shaped local life.

Errington did not become an incorporated municipality. It grew as an unincorporated community within what is now the Regional District of Nanaimo. That matters for travellers: governance, parks, planning and services are regional or provincial rather than town-hall based.

What Errington Is Like Today

The Regional District of Nanaimo identifies Errington within Electoral Area F, along with Coombs, Hilliers, Whiskey Creek and Meadowood. Statistics Canada recorded 2,907 people in the Errington designated place in 2021.

Today Errington has a rural-residential character with a strong community identity. It is close to Parksville’s services, but the local feel changes quickly once you leave the highway: narrower roads, treed lots, hobby farms, community facilities and routes toward Englishman River Falls. Visitors should expect local life first and visitor infrastructure second.

That is part of Errington’s draw. The community is close to busy Oceanside destinations, yet it still feels like a working rural place. Markets, hall events and local gatherings should be checked from current sources before you plan around them, since schedules can be seasonal or volunteer-run.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Englishman River Falls Park is the clearest visitor anchor. BC Parks describes two waterfalls, canyon views, forest trails, camping and a day-use area. It is reached by following Errington Road off Highway 4, which makes the community part of the practical approach to the park.

Errington itself is worth slowing down for if you like rural Vancouver Island landscapes. Look for public community spaces, local markets or events when they are operating, and leave private farms and yards alone. Coombs and Parksville add services, but Errington’s own appeal is its mix of settlement, forest and river access.

If your time is short, make the route simple: one community stop, one waterfall walk, and enough daylight for rural driving back to the highway. That keeps the visit realistic.
