Vauxhall, Alberta: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide
Vauxhall is a southern prairie town in Alberta’s Central Prairies region, along Highway 36 north of Taber. Known locally as the Potato Capital of the West, it is shaped by irrigation, agriculture, oil and gas activity, school and sport facilities, and a practical main-street service role.
Travellers usually reach Vauxhall by road between Taber, Brooks, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat routes. The town is not large, but its identity is clear: irrigated farmland, community sport, local parks, campground use and everyday services in a productive rural district.
How Vauxhall Started
The Town’s municipal development plan describes Vauxhall as a service centre for the surrounding rural population and travellers. Highway 36, the Veterans Memorial Highway, helped give the community a strong north-south access role, while irrigation land made intensive agriculture possible in a dry prairie setting.
Vauxhall incorporated as a town on January 1, 1961. Over time, agriculture, irrigation, oil and gas, schools and local businesses reinforced its role as a small town serving farms and families around the Municipal District of Taber.
The development plan also emphasizes residential land, commercial services and industrial space for a rural area that depends on irrigation, trucking and farm equipment. That helps explain why visitors see grain, sports fields, shops and highway services close together.
What Vauxhall Is Like Today
Vauxhall had 1,288 residents in the 2021 census. The Town describes a community of roughly 1,200 residents with parks, tennis courts, a public library, outdoor pool, Legion, fire department, RCMP detachment, medical clinic, schools, small businesses and a weekly newspaper.
Sport is a visible part of town life. The Town highlights the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, hockey, curling, figure skating, soccer, golf, an outdoor pool, camping, walking paths, farmers markets and community suppers. Agriculture remains the economic frame around it all.
On a short stop, those facilities are the visible signs of a town built around residents first: errands, practices, games, meals and campground nights.
Things to Do and Places Nearby
Start with the town centre and parks. Vauxhall Legion Park is a central green space with picnic and recreation facilities, and the town’s pool, arena, library and sports fields show how local recreation is organized. Baseball visitors may know Vauxhall through Jets Stadium and the academy.
The Lions campground just outside town is useful for summer travellers. Vauxhall Golf Club, local events, Canada Day activities and agricultural roads around town add simple reasons to pause. The wider trip can include Taber-area services, irrigation-country drives and Highway 36 travel.
