Wild Horse Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Wild Horse Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in Kananaskis, 65 kilometres southwest of Sundre off Forestry Trunk Road, Highway 734. Alberta Parks lists one group-use area and no developed day-use area count.

Friends of the Eastern Slopes Association is shown as partner and operator context on the official page.

Why Visit Wild Horse Provincial Recreation Area

Wild Horse is a self-maintained group-use area near the Red Deer River, within driving distance of scenic hikes to Bighorn Falls and Eagle Lake. Alberta Parks frames it as a base for fishing, hiking, relaxing, and exploring nearby OHV trails.

Activities include front-country hiking, equestrian use, and off-site OHV riding. Equestrian staging is available adjacent to the recreation area, with informal trails nearby.

OHV rules are specific. Alberta Parks says OHV off-loading within the campground and travel on established roadways during daylight hours are permitted, but off-road travel inside the park is not permitted. The maximum OHV speed in the recreation area is 15 kilometres per hour.

No nightly fee is charged, but campers are encouraged to purchase an annual Friends of the Eastern Slopes membership to support operations.

Self-maintained sites reward prepared and flexible groups.
