Wapiabi Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in the Central region, west and north of Rocky Mountain House. Alberta Parks lists one day-use area and one campground, while also explaining that random backcountry camping is permitted.
The site lies in the Wapiabi River and Blackstone River landscape.
Wapiabi is a large backcountry recreation area for random camping, backcountry hiking, hunting, and fishing in the upper foothills and alpine-subalpine transition. Alberta Parks lists the park at 9,965.55 acres, or 4,033.06 hectares.
Random backcountry camping is permitted, but Alberta Parks says there are no campsites or facilities and no permit or fee is required. Visitors should review random camping restrictions and set up guidance before travelling.
Fishing notes point to trout and mountain whitefish in the Blackstone River and its tributaries downstream of Mons Creek and its tributaries. Hunting plans require current regulations and licences.
The natural-region description says Wapiabi includes the Wapiabi River valley from Wapiabi Gap east to the Blackstone River. The valley is an important wildlife corridor for moose, elk, wolves, and grizzly bears, and bull trout occur in the Wapiabi River, Blackstone River, and Sturrock Creek.
Travel prepared.
Plan around random backcountry camping, backcountry hiking, fishing, hunting, wildlife-corridor awareness, Wapiabi and Blackstone River route research, and map review.
Confirm access, random camping guidance, fishing and hunting rules, licences, wildlife safety, maps, weather, emergency planning, and Alberta Parks updates before travelling.
