Trout Pond Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Trout Pond Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks day-use recreation area in Kananaskis, 45 kilometres southwest of Longview on Highway 541 and 17 kilometres north on Forestry Trunk Road, Highway 40. Alberta Parks lists one day-use area.

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley. Kananaskis Campground Services Inc. is shown as facility operator.

Why Visit Trout Pond Provincial Recreation Area

Trout Pond is a small Highwood-area day-use stop surrounded by rolling, tree-covered hills. Alberta Parks highlights short, easy trails to a pond with views of Mist Mountain to the north.

The official page also notes generously spaced picnic tables in the trees, providing privacy and shade for lunch on hot summer days. Activities are simple: front-country hiking and picnicking.

This is not a campground or a large trailhead. Plan it as a short Kananaskis pause, picnic stop, or easy walk near the Highwood corridor.

Access timing matters because Alberta Parks says Highway 40 west of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to Highwood House Junction is closed annually from December 1 to June 14. Confirm road status before using Highway 40 as part of the route.

Keep the stop short, shaded, quiet, and weather-aware.

Things To Do

Plan around day-use picnics, short easy trails, pond views, Mist Mountain scenery, shaded picnic tables, Highwood route planning, and a low-key Kananaskis stop.
