Sylvan Lake Natural Area | Alberta

Sylvan Lake Natural Area is an Alberta Parks natural area in the Central region, on the northwest shore of Sylvan Lake about 10 kilometres northeast of Eckville. Alberta Parks lists no developed day-use area count.

Activities include birding, front-country hiking, and hunting.

Why Visit Sylvan Lake Natural Area

Sylvan Lake Natural Area is a small but biologically rich shore parcel for birding, walking, and careful hunting-rule research. Alberta Parks lists the site at 33.2 acres, or 13.436 hectares.

Birding is the standout official detail. Alberta Parks notes pileated woodpecker habitat tied to old-growth tree stands and wood-boring insects, and says the area is also excellent for waterfowl viewing.

The park-management description places the site at the southernmost extension of Alberta's boreal forest. It notes boreal plants, including three species of woodland fern, at their known lowland southern limits. A levee parallels the shoreline and shelters a lagoon-like habitat with willow shrubbery, reed beds, marsh plants, and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Hunting requires special caution because the official page calls this a very small parcel and warns hunters to consider nearby residences, camping units, and other recreational users.

Its small size makes birding and hunting planning sensitive to nearby people and property at all times.

Things To Do
