Shunda Viewpoint Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in the Central region, 26 kilometres east of Nordegg and five kilometres north on the access road off Highway 11. Alberta Parks lists one group-use area.
Westward Bound Campgrounds is shown as facility operator.
Shunda Viewpoint is a small group-use and viewpoint site near the old Shunda Ranger Station. Alberta Parks says the viewpoint gives a panoramic look over the Brazeau Range and North Saskatchewan River valley, with two benches at the group site after the access-road climb.
The official page also points to off-site ATV trails that connect with the rail trail toward Taunton Bridge at Saunders. Activities include off-site OHV riding, off-site snowmobiling, and geocaching.
OHV rules are specific. Alberta Parks says OHV off-loading within the campground and travel on established roadways during daylight hours are permitted inside the recreation area, but off-road travel within the PRA is not permitted. The maximum OHV speed in the recreation area is 15 kilometres per hour.
This is also a David Thompson Highway fall-colour stop, especially in September according to the official page.
Group users should separate viewpoint time from off-site motorized travel plans.
Plan around group use, viewpoint stops, Brazeau Range and North Saskatchewan River valley scenery, geocaching, off-site OHV access, off-site snowmobiling, and fall colours.
Confirm group-use availability, operator updates, OHV off-loading rules, established-roadway limits, speed limits, snowmobile access, maps, road conditions, weather, and Alberta Parks updates.
