Sentinel Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in Kananaskis, 40 kilometres southwest of Longview on Highway 541. Alberta Parks lists one day-use area and no campground.
The official page says a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley. Kananaskis Campground Services Inc. is shown as facility operator.
Sentinel is a simple Kananaskis day-use area for fishing, front-country hiking, and geocaching in the Highwood and Cataract trail region. Alberta Parks lists those three activities on the official page.
The map section is especially useful. Alberta Parks links the Highwood and Cataract Summer Trails Map, which includes Sentinel along with nearby recreation areas and routes such as Cat Creek, Cataract Creek, Etherington Creek, Lantern Creek, Mist Creek, Picklejar Lakes, Plateau Mountain, Raspberry Pass, Skyline, and Valley Bottom trails.
The official page does not list camping, group use, a visitor centre, or developed lake facilities. Plan Sentinel as a day-use stop, trail-map reference, or short outing rather than an overnight destination.
The simple site can still be useful as a route anchor when nearby Kananaskis trailheads are busy.
Because it sits in Kananaskis, visitors should check pass requirements, current trail reports, weather, wildfire advisories, wildlife safety, and snake safety before travel.
Plan around fishing, front-country hiking, geocaching, Highwood and Cataract map review, nearby trail comparisons, day-use parking, and Kananaskis route planning.
Confirm Conservation Pass requirements, day-use access, fishing rules, trail reports, maps, snake and wildlife safety, weather, and Alberta Parks updates.
