Saunders Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Saunders Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in the Central region, 22 kilometres east of Nordegg on Highway 11 and eight kilometres south on the access road. Alberta Parks lists one campground and no developed day-use area count.

Westward Bound Campgrounds is shown as facility operator.

Why Visit Saunders Provincial Recreation Area

Saunders provides road and water access to the North Saskatchewan River for camping, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, river boats, and fishing. Alberta Parks says the canoe trip to Rocky Mountain House takes approximately eight hours.

The site also has historical context. Alberta Parks notes nearby historical attractions including the Saunders mine site and town site, plus a cairn honoring the ranger who died while operating the ferry once used here.

Activities include camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, power boating, and off-site snowmobiling. Power boating is limited to jet or river boats. Canoeing, kayaking, and power boating include aquatic invasive species reminders, so visitors should clean, drain, and dry gear.

Snowmobile rules are specific: informal trails are in the vicinity, but snowmobile off-loading within the campground and travel to trails from campsites are prohibited. River conditions, route timing, and shuttle planning matter for paddlers.

Set aside time for shuttle coordination if the river section is part of the day.

Things To Do

Plan around riverside camping, North Saskatchewan River canoeing, kayaking, rafting, jet or river boats, fishing, Saunders mine and ferry history, and snowmobile-rule checks.

Planning Notes

Confirm campground status, operator updates, river conditions, AIS precautions, fishing rules, snowmobile restrictions, route timing, maps, weather, and Alberta Parks updates.
