Rumsey Ecological Reserve | Alberta

Rumsey Ecological Reserve is an Alberta Parks ecological reserve in the Central region, approximately 50 kilometres north of Drumheller, with the northern boundary adjacent to Highway 589. Alberta Parks lists no developed day-use area count.

The official page shows a fire ban and no-fires use.

Why Visit Rumsey Ecological Reserve

Rumsey Ecological Reserve protects part of the largest remaining tract of aspen parkland in Canada. Alberta Parks says overnight camping and open fires are prohibited in ecological reserves, there are no facilities on site, and public travel is restricted to foot only.

Access requires preparation. Alberta Parks says there are no public roads in the reserve, and visitors should contact the current leaseholder before entering. Leaseholder contact information is available from Public Lands.

The landscape is important. Alberta Parks describes hummocky moraine, or knob-and-kettle topography, where wet-year kettles become highly productive waterfowl habitat. Rumsey Ecological Reserve and Rumsey Natural Area together protect plants, birds, and mammals at both northern and southern range limits.

Activities include birding, backcountry hiking, wildlife viewing, and no-fires use. Birding notes include Sprague's pipit, upland sandpiper, Baird's sparrow, red-eyed vireo, northern oriole, mallards, and killdeer.

Because the reserve has no facilities and no public roads, visitors should carry water, navigation, sun protection, and emergency plans. Travel should stay quiet and low impact because wetlands and grassland nesting habitat are the main reason this reserve exists.

Things To Do

Plan around foot-only backcountry hiking, birding, wildlife viewing, no-fire compliance, leaseholder contact, knob-and-kettle wetland observation, and ecological reserve awareness.

Planning Notes

Confirm fire bans, leaseholder contact, foot-only access, no-camping rules, no-road access, maps, weather, wildlife safety, and Alberta Parks updates.
