Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park | Alberta

Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park is an Alberta Parks provincial park in the North region. The official page lists seven day-use areas, two campgrounds, one comfort camping facility, three group-use areas, one special facility, and one visitor centre.

Alberta Parks describes it as one of the province's signature parks.

Why Visit Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park

Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park was established in 1966 to protect Marten Mountain, extensive natural sand beaches, and a rare road-accessible sand dune and wetland complex at Devonshire Beach. Alberta Parks says the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory was added in 1993 and is one of only a handful of boreal bird observatories in the world.

The park has Marten River and Devonshire South campgrounds, group-use areas, and more than 35 kilometres of trails for hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Twenty-five kilometres of trail are part of the Trans Canada Trail. Beaches at Devonshire and Marten River Campground support swimming, sun, and sandcastle days.

Habitats range from foothills and mixedwood forest to wetlands, shoreline, and ancient sand dunes. Birding notes include Important Bird Area status, tundra swan migration, globally important western grebe nesting habitat, migrant songbirds, and a spring Songbird Festival.

Visitors can tour the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory, stop at the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, golf at Gilwood Golf and Country Club, and use winter trails when conditions allow. Larger boats launch outside the park at the municipal boat launch south of the park.
