Lake McGregor Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in the South region, located at the northernmost part of Lake McGregor. The official page places it 20 kilometres north of Vulcan on Highway 23 and 25 kilometres east on Highway 542.
Alberta Parks lists one day-use area and one campground.
Lake McGregor is a prairie reservoir destination for camping, swimming, boating, fishing, and birding. Alberta Parks describes it as a prairie gem with riverside camping, swimming, boating recreation, fishing opportunities, trails, grassland flowers and shrubs, and many birds including white pelicans.
Activities include birding, camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, ice fishing, mountain biking and cycling, power boating, sailing, swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, and electric bicycles. Watercraft activities include aquatic invasive species reminders, so clean-drain-dry planning belongs with any boat, canoe, kayak, or sail craft.
Birding is a major reason to visit. Alberta Parks says American white pelicans and double-crested cormorants forage on the reservoir from April to September, with non-breeding pelican numbers among the highest observed anywhere in Alberta. Spring and fall bring waterfowl staging, including snow geese, Canada geese, and greater white-fronted geese.
The official page also notes blue-winged teals, northern shovelers, marbled godwits, and long-billed curlews. Swimming requires caution because McGregor Lake is very cold, and current advisories should be checked for boat-launch hazards.
Plan around camping, day use, swimming, boating, paddling, sailing, fishing, ice fishing, cycling, birding, water skiing, wind surfing, and trail walks.
