Kennedy Coulee Ecological Reserve | Alberta

Kennedy Coulee Ecological Reserve is an Alberta Parks ecological reserve in the South region. The official page places it approximately 80 kilometres southeast of Foremost, just north of the Alberta and Montana border, and currently shows a fire ban.

Alberta Parks lists no developed day-use area count. The surfaced activities are backcountry hiking and no-fires use.

Why Visit Kennedy Coulee Ecological Reserve

Kennedy Coulee is a foot-only ecological reserve for visitors prepared for a very low-service outing. Alberta Parks states that overnight camping and open fires are prohibited in ecological reserves, and that there are no facilities on this site. Camping facilities are available west of the reserve at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park.

Access is specific. Alberta Parks says Kennedy Coulee can be reached from Highways 879 and 880 south of Foremost, and that public access in the reserve is restricted to foot only. Motorized vehicle use is not generally permitted, although it is occasionally allowed for research and collection purposes.

Because the official page does not list developed trails, water, washrooms, or visitor services, visitors should plan conservatively with maps, weather, emergency planning, and all supplies handled before travel.

The site is best approached as a protected ecological reserve, not a general recreation area.

Carry water and reliable navigation.

Things To Do

Plan around foot-only backcountry hiking, ecological reserve awareness, map review, access via Highways 879 and 880, no-fire compliance, and low-impact observation.

Planning Notes

Confirm fire bans, foot-only access, no-camping rules, route conditions, maps, advisories, weather, emergency planning, and Alberta Parks instructions.
