Grand Rapids Wildland Provincial Park | Alberta

Grand Rapids Wildland Provincial Park is an Alberta Parks wildland park along the Athabasca River in the North region. The official page places it beginning approximately 20 kilometres west of Fort McMurray and approximately 16 kilometres upstream from Fort McMurray.

Alberta Parks says the park preserves the nationally significant Rapids Reach, where the river is deeply incised and bedrock meanders are a major feature.

Why Visit Grand Rapids Wildland Provincial Park

Grand Rapids is a river-access wildland destination for paddlers, boaters, hunters, anglers, snowmobilers, and visitors interested in the historic portage around the Athabasca River rapids. Activities include backcountry camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, backcountry hiking, hunting, power boating, on-site snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing.

Camping is random backcountry. Alberta Parks notes a natural clearing campsite with a firepit, toilet, and bear-proof containers at the Historical Grand Rapids Portage Trail. The trail has been upgraded and reopened, with stairs, trail clearing, and a campsite clearing to help canoe users portage around the rapids.

Access planning is serious. Summer access is by power boating, canoeing, and fly-in float plane, while winter access is by snowmobile. Landing aircraft in the park requires authorization from Alberta Parks. The official page also notes Grand Rapids Wilderness Adventures lodge and cabins near the southernmost boundary, accessible by river, float plane, and snowmobile only.
