Elk River Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in the Central region. The official page places it 17 kilometres southwest of Lodgepole on Highway 620 and 47 kilometres west on Elk River Road.
Alberta Parks currently marks the park closed due to wildfire damage until further notice. That closure is the first planning detail to check before considering any visit.
When open, Elk River is listed with one day-use area and one campground. Alberta Parks surfaces camping, fishing, equestrian use, horseshoes, and off-site OHV riding, so the site is normally a small recreation base for river-country camping and nearby trail use.
The official cautions matter. Alberta Parks says horseback riding has access to informal trails only and that equestrian use is not permitted within the recreation area. OHV riding is also off-site, with informal trails in the vicinity, but OHV off-loading within the campground and travel to trails from campsites is prohibited.
Boating expectations should stay modest. Alberta Parks notes that low water levels preclude boating on the Elk River except in the lower reaches near Brazeau Dam.
Because the wildfire closure overrides the amenity list, this page is most useful right now for confirming status, understanding what facilities normally exist, and knowing which rules will still need review if the area reopens.
Plan only after confirming reopening. Normal planning can include camping, day use, fishing, horseshoes, informal equestrian trail research, off-site OHV trail checks, and Brazeau Dam boating context.
Confirm closure status, wildfire recovery updates, campground access, fishing rules, OHV and equestrian limits, maps, advisories, weather, and Alberta Parks instructions.
