Elbow Falls Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Elbow Falls Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks site in Kananaskis Country. Alberta Parks places it 30 kilometres west of Bragg Creek on Highway 66 and notes that a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required.

The official page describes Elbow Falls as popular because of its beauty and proximity to Calgary. The falls are easy to access, with a short paved trail from the parking lot to scenic viewpoints.

Why Visit Elbow Falls Provincial Recreation Area

Elbow Falls is one of the more straightforward Kananaskis day-use stops: arrive, follow the paved viewpoint route, and see the waterfall without needing a long hike. Alberta Parks lists three day-use areas and one campground, so visitors can also fold the falls into a wider Elbow Valley plan.

Activities include camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, front-country hiking, trail running, and mountain biking and cycling. The paddling note is more advanced than the easy viewpoint access: Alberta Parks describes the Quirk Creek access road to Elbow Falls as Grade II to III water for intermediate open canoes.

Seasonal road access is a major planning detail. Alberta Parks says Highway 66 west of Elbow Falls and Powderface Road are closed annually from December 1 to May 14.

The recreation area is also supported by Kananaskis Campground Services Inc., and Alberta Parks points visitors to RV sewage disposal stations in Kananaskis for that broader camping context.
