Dawson Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Dawson Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in Kananaskis. The official route places it east of Canmore, south on Highway 40, east on Highway 68, and south on Powderface Trail.

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley.

Why Visit Dawson Provincial Recreation Area

Dawson is a Kananaskis campground and day-use base with trail access, creek fishing, and regional history. Alberta Parks lists one campground, one day-use area, and activities including camping, fishing, front-country hiking, equestrian use, mountain biking and cycling, and off-site snowmobiling.

Fishing is tied to Jumpingpound Creek, which is in Fish Management Zone 1, the Eastern Slopes zone. Alberta Parks directs anglers to the Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations for seasons and catch limits.

Snowmobile rules are specific. Snowmobile use inside the recreation area is not permitted except to access trails in the adjacent Sibbald Snow Vehicle Public Land Use Zone and Powderface Trail Road. The park is named for George Mercer Dawson, who conducted timber surveys in Kananaskis river valleys in 1883-84.

That makes Dawson useful in more than one season, but every winter plan should separate access travel from riding within the recreation area itself.

Things To Do

Plan around camping, day use, Jumpingpound Creek fishing, front-country hiking, equestrian travel, mountain biking, snowmobile access checks, Powderface route planning, and map review.
