Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area 22 kilometres west of Nordegg on Highway 11 and six kilometres north on a gravel access road. The park has one day-use area and one campground.

Alberta Parks warns that the Bighorn River and waterfalls are extremely dangerous, with fast, cold water and a strong undertow.

Why Visit Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area

Crescent Falls is a waterfall-viewing destination with serious safety rules. Alberta Parks says newly renovated day-use viewing platforms and a staircase let visitors safely view the waterfalls, while the areas above and below the falls are managed as a special protective zone where access is prohibited.

Visitors must stay in day-use areas, on designated trails, and behind fences and barricades. The official page says visitors park at the upper parking lot and use an 800-metre trail with 66 metres of elevation gain to reach the day-use area; the trail is rated moderate to expert because of the incline.

The campground has nine walk-in tent sites and 21 RV campsites. Activities include camping, fishing, front-country hiking, and equestrian use. The Bighorn Canyon Trail is about three kilometres one way and has elevated views of both waterfall sets, while equestrian use is limited to the one-kilometre Bighorn Meadows Equestrian Access Trail.

Things To Do

Plan around waterfall viewing platforms, campground stays, the access trail, Bighorn Canyon Trail, fishing, limited equestrian access, and road-condition checks.

Planning Notes

Confirm road access, seasonal gate status, campground status, waterfall safety closures, trail conditions, fishing rules, equestrian limits, maps, advisories, and Alberta Parks updates.
