Chinook Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area beneath Crowsnest Mountain. Alberta Parks describes year-round recreation around Chinook Lake, shaded picnic sites, nearby hiking and mountain biking trails, and winter ski and snowshoe routes.
The official page lists one day-use area and one campground.
Chinook is a mountain lake base with camping, summer trails, and winter recreation. Chinook Campground has well-treed, fully reservable sites across four loops, including a tenting loop.
Activities include camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, cross-country skiing, front-country hiking, mountain biking and cycling, and snowshoeing. Alberta Parks says hiking and mountain biking are excellent on the Allison Chinook Trail Network in summer, with summer access from May 1 to November 30.
Winter access changes the experience. Alberta Parks says there is no vehicle access beyond Allison Brood Trout Station and Atlas Day Use Area in winter, access roads are gated, and the roads are groomed as cross-country ski trails. The Crowsnest Nordic Ski Club grooms and supports the Nordic Ski and Multiuse Trail System.
That seasonal shift means summer trail users and winter skiers should read different maps, reports, and access notes before travelling.
Plan around reservable camping, paddling, fishing, shaded picnics, front-country hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, trail reports, and ice-safety checks.
Match the trip to seasonal access rules.
Check grooming updates before winter trips.
