Cat Creek Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Cat Creek Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area in Kananaskis. Alberta Parks places it 45 kilometres southwest of Longview on Highway 541 and four kilometres north on Highway 40.

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park a vehicle in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley.

Why Visit Cat Creek Provincial Recreation Area

Cat Creek is named for the creek that runs through it and contains a day-use area plus a small section of the Highwood River. Alberta Parks lists one day-use area and no campground on the official page.

The activity list includes front-country hiking, mountain biking and cycling, and fishing. The hiking note is specific: Alberta Parks points visitors to a self-guided interpretive walking trail on the Cat Creek Interpretive Trail.

Cat Creek also appears on the Highwood and Cataract summer trails map alongside nearby Kananaskis recreation areas and trails. That makes it useful as a focused day-use stop or as one piece of a larger Highwood-area route plan.

Because the official page does not list camping, visitors should keep overnight plans tied to other confirmed facilities.

Things To Do

Plan around the Cat Creek Interpretive Trail, front-country hiking, mountain biking, fishing, Highwood River scenery, map review, and a short Kananaskis day-use stop.

Use current trail and advisory information before linking it with nearby routes.

Check Kananaskis conditions close to departure.

Adjust route timing accordingly.

Planning Notes

Confirm Conservation Pass requirements, day-use access, trail conditions, fishing regulations, maps, advisories, closures, weather, and current Alberta Parks instructions.
