Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area | Alberta

Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta Parks recreation area located 72 kilometres north of Nordegg on gravel Highway 734. Alberta Parks says the site sits on the banks of the Brazeau River.

The official page lists one campground and no day-use areas, with Brazeau River Campground identified as the facility.

Why Visit Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area

Brazeau River is a secluded riverside base for outdoor recreation. Alberta Parks says the surrounding area offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and exploring trails beyond the recreation area boundaries.

The activity list includes camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, front-country hiking, equestrian use, mountain biking and cycling, off-site OHV riding, and off-site snowmobiling. Alberta Parks notes that campsites are located on both sides of the river and that river access for canoeing is from the lower campground.

Trail use has limits. Horseback riding has access to undeveloped trails, but horses are prohibited in the recreation area. OHV and snowmobile trails are informal and nearby, while off-loading within the campground and travel to trails from campsites are prohibited.

Those rules make Brazeau River a good base for nearby trails, not a staging area to treat casually.

Things To Do

Plan around riverside camping, paddling from the lower campground, fishing, front-country hiking, mountain biking, equestrian access to undeveloped trails, and nearby off-site OHV or snowmobile routes.

Keep staging and horse-use rules clear before arrival.

Planning Notes

Confirm gravel road conditions, campground status, river access, fishing regulations, horse restrictions, OHV and snowmobile staging rules, maps, advisories, weather, and Alberta Parks updates.
