Bluerock Wildland Provincial Park is an Alberta Parks wildland provincial park in Kananaskis, about 15 kilometres west of Turner Valley along Highway 546.
Alberta Parks says the park was established in 2001 and named for Bluerock Creek, which flows from Bluerock Mountain. Bluerock Mountain itself is named for blue-grey, shale-rich rock formations.
Bluerock is a mountain backcountry park with clear terrain contrasts. Alberta Parks says there are eight named mountains in the park, with Bluerock Mountain the highest and most prominent at 2,729 metres, or 8,986 feet.
The western reaches become more rugged, with jagged peaks, lodgepole pine, and spruce. The eastern stretches are described as more gradual rolling hills, forests, and open meadow. Alberta Parks also lists elk, moose, deer, black bear, grizzly bear, bighorn sheep, cougars, and various fish species.
The official activity list includes fishing, backcountry hiking, front-country hiking, and equestrian use. Random backcountry camping is permitted, but Alberta Parks says there are no campsites or facilities, and no permit or fee is required.
That combination rewards visitors who can match route ambition to conditions.
Plan around mountain hiking, equestrian travel, fishing, wildlife-aware route planning, random backcountry camping, day-use access, and map review for nearby Kananaskis parks.
The park is surrounded by Sheep River Provincial Park, Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park, and Don Getty Wildland Provincial Park.
