Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park | Alberta

Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park is an Alberta Parks wildland provincial park about 135 kilometres northwest of Fort McMurray. Alberta Parks says access is limited: summer access is fly-in only, while winter access uses industry roads for 115 kilometres and then snowmobile travel on designated trails.

Random backcountry camping is permitted, but there are no developed campgrounds in the park.

Why Visit Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park

Birch Mountains is a remote boreal backcountry park for experienced planners. Alberta Parks says it contains one of the most diverse intact hill systems in the Boreal Forest Natural Region.

The park includes peatlands, a California gull colony, and one of Canada's only free-roaming wood bison herds outside Wood Buffalo National Park. The activity list includes backcountry camping, birding, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, backcountry hiking, hunting, ice fishing, on-site OHV riding, power boating, on-site snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing.

The access and OHV rules are critical. Alberta Parks says OHV use is on existing trails only and off-trail use is prohibited. Namur Lake Lodge and Island Lake Lodge are named on the official page.

Because the park is remote and services are limited, every activity on the list depends on serious logistics rather than casual arrival.

Things To Do

Plan around fly-in or winter snowmobile access, random backcountry camping, birding, paddling, fishing, hunting, ice fishing, OHV use on existing trails, snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing.

Build routes around confirmed access points, seasonal travel windows, and emergency communication before committing to the trip.

Planning Notes

Confirm access, lodge logistics, trail restrictions, camping rules, hunting and fishing regulations, maps, advisories, weather, emergency communication, and current Alberta Parks guidance.
