Big Island Provincial Park | Alberta

Big Island Provincial Park is an Alberta Parks provincial park along the North Saskatchewan River in southwest Edmonton. Alberta Parks says the park was officially established by Order in Council on February 16, 2023.

The park is managed through a tri-government partnership between the Alberta government, Enoch Cree Nation, and the City of Edmonton.

Why Visit Big Island Provincial Park

Big Island is a new and still-developing park where access is the main planning fact. Alberta Parks says visitors can access the park by boat via the North Saskatchewan River, but the park is not currently accessible by land.

The official page says there are active steps underway to secure overland access, but visitors should not trespass on private property to enter or leave Big Island by land. Current use should stay on existing informal trails.

There are currently no facilities or services within Big Island, including garbage receptacles. Alberta Parks tells visitors to pack in and pack out and leave no trace.

The activity list includes canoeing and kayaking, front-country hiking, and wildlife viewing. That makes Big Island appealing, but only for visitors who can plan around river access and no services.

Its Edmonton location may look convenient on a map, but the official access limits make it a river-planning destination first.

Things To Do

Plan around boat-based access, canoeing or kayaking, informal-trail hiking, wildlife viewing, river conditions, pack-in-pack-out travel, and learning about the partnership shaping the park.

Planning Notes

Confirm boat access, no-land-access status, private property boundaries, trail guidance, no-facility expectations, maps, advisories, river conditions, weather, and Alberta Parks updates.
