The Athabasca River, (3rd largest un dammed river in North America), has been designated one of the Canada's "Heritage Rivers" for the portion within Jasper National Park. Historically important to Canada, this mighty river was the main highway of the North West Company, rival to the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1810, David Thompson came up the Athabasca River as far as "The Meeting of The Waters". From there he went up the Whirlpool River to the Athabasca Pass. This discovery allowed him to reach the Columbia River and thereby open up the British Columbia area for fur trading. Jasper Raft Tours specializes in group travel.
