Bentley is a small town in central Alberta’s Central Prairies, northwest of Red Deer and close to Gull Lake. It sits in Lacombe County near Highway 12, with a broad main street, market culture, lake access and Blindman Valley views shaping the stop.
Travellers often pass through on the way to Gull Lake or Sylvan Lake, but Bentley has enough local structure for a slower visit: a walk downtown, a market stop, parks and an easy lake drive.
How Bentley Started
Bentley began with late 19th-century settlers arriving from the United States, often travelling from Lacombe, then the nearest railway station. A post office opened in 1901, and early church and school buildings followed.
The community incorporated as a village in 1915. A major fire in 1916 destroyed buildings on the south side of the settlement. The response shaped the town’s most recognizable street feature: a wider centre roadway and later boulevard designed to reduce future fire risk.
Bentley became a town in 2001. Its history remains visible in the main-street layout and in the way the town functions as a small service centre for nearby farms, lake properties and rural residents.

Bentley recorded 1,042 residents in the 2021 census. It is a town with local government, recreation facilities, shops, food services and access to nearby rural and lake destinations.

Walk the main street and note the wide boulevard, then continue toward Gull Lake for beach, boating or campground plans. Nearby lake communities and Sylvan Lake can fill a longer day, but Bentley works best as the small-town service and market stop in that route.
